If you have been into photography for awhile like I have you too might have gotten the urge to make your own book. Now I can share from experience the good and the bad to save you the ugly.
On the plus side this publishing experience I have been made much more aware of what I capture, when, where, how and why. Not all pretty scenes make great images. Sometimes they are just pretty scenes and need to be enjoyed just for what they are. Then there is the distillation process. How do I go from a library of 40,000 images down to a manageable 200 or so? Do I pick the 'best of' or do I look for images that fit together as a body of work. Do I get advice, and do I listen to it or to my own heart. And finally accepting that there is no perfect world. At some point it is good enough and time to get on with the next project.
On the bad side, there are the costs, both in time and money. There is the new software, the gliches, the delays, the miss-communications, the compromises, and more time. Then there is the need to market and market some more.
When all is said and done there is finally born a finished product that I can be proud of, and one that brings joy and beauty to others. Having come full cycle I can say I am glad I did it and I appreciate the many many folks who now have the book and have given me such wonderful feedback. Please enjoy Alaskan Air and thank you for the support.
