The book is finally out and available! - 2011-09-23

If you have been into photography for awhile like I have you too might have gotten the urge to make your own book. Now I can share from experience the good and the bad to save you the ugly. On the plus side this publishing experience I have been made much more aware of what I capture, when, where, how and why. Not all pretty scenes make great images. Sometimes they are just pretty scenes and need to be enjoyed just for what they are. Then there is the distillation process. How do I go from a library of 40,000 images down to a manageable 200 or so? Do I pick the 'best of' or do I look for images that fit together as a body of work. Do I get advice, and do I listen to it or to my own heart. And finally accepting that there is no perfect world. At some point it is good enough and time to get on with the next project. On the bad side, there are the costs, both in time and money. There is the new software, the gliches, the delays, the miss-communications, the compromises, and more time. Then there is the need to market and market some more. When all is said and done there is finally born a finished product that I can be proud of, and one that brings joy and beauty to others. Having come full cycle I can say I am glad I did it and I appreciate the many many folks who now have the book and have given me such wonderful feedback. Stern magazine has printed this image as a two page spread in the 2.9.2010 issue NR 36 in Germany. For this shot I took a model and an inflatable kayak on a float plane to Lake George in the Chugach State Park near Anchorage Alaska. LINK TO STERN MAGAZINE National Geographic in their Special Edition summer 2011, on America's National Parks feature a two page spread of my aerial shot of the east side of Mount McKinley (a.k.a. Denali). It is on pages 82 and 83. Often passengers are surprised at my camera on my lap but after a few shots they see that the plane does not fall out of the sky if I take two seconds to capture an image. Without the photography I would have quit the flying years ago. In the Spring 2011 issue of 'friends of we Chinese in America' there is a two page spread of nine of my images including a full page of this American Buffalo with her new born calf. I was witness to this calf being born, almost die, get rescued, get left for dead, and then overnight reunite with her mother all in Rocky Mountain snow storm.
