In this gallery I share both the large panoramas and the small macro shots. The beauty of Alaska and the desert southwest are remarkably similar. I love to shoot aerial images all summer while I work as a bush pilot, but often I am on 'standby' for hours, so I gladly take my camera gear along and shoot closeups of flowers, bugs, berries, and frost. Some of the most unusual shots come from the most remote locations which are accessible only by airplane. Feel free to "Like" any image and share it. ]]>This series was shot on the shore of Naknek lake, in Katmai National Park, where Brooks Falls is located. It is probably the most visited Grizzly bear viewing spot in the world. I fly there at least half a dozen times during the summer months, typically in July. You never know exactly what you will see.
At risk of giving them human attributes, this very much resembled two kids playing rough house, and a mother coming over to settle them down. Finally she looks into the camera, "What's a mother to do?"

]]>Each summer I work as a bush pilot and fly for Rust's Flying Service out of Lake Hood, in Anchorage Alaska. This unique job gives me unparalleled access to remote bear viewing locations like Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park. We also fly daily to beautiful lodges that often have bears very nearby. You can check my links page for more information.

At Brooks I have had Grizzlies walk pass less than 10 feet away and while it was a bit nerve wracking it was not all that dangerous. However if I saw a grizzly 50 yards away while at home or around Anchorage I would be very very worried and move off as fast as practical. It all has to do with being aware of your surroundings and minimizing the risk where you can. Sometimes my photography gets me into situations I later look book and wonder, "What was I thinking?" Hopefully I at least got the shot.

One of the joys for me in photography is to move from one genre to another, shooting macro one day and abstracts the next. If the weather is too boring outside then maybe shooting at night and painting the scene with flashlights. This gallery I reserve for some of my favorites across the spectrum, from macro to landscape, bears and moose, to aurora and from Alaska to desert southwest. Add to that my summer job as a bush pilot and you have what many people tell me is the ideal job. Of course as I get older things like medicare and retirement come to mind, but that's another long story best shared over a beer sometime.

]]>While it often seems that moose are everywhere, I can go weeks without seeing one. Then the next day they might be between me and my parked car, or stomping on the deck behind my house. People often carry bear spray and bells and weapons, but it's moose that hurt and kill more people than do bears. And while I can't advise it you will see than some of my moose photographs were taken less than 20 feet from them. Around 400 moose will be killed on the road less than 100 miles from Anchorage every year. So when you come to Alaska watch out for the moose.

]]>Birds are so much fun to shoot because they require patience and luck, and maybe some skill too. Alaska sees a lot of birds migrate in and out each year. I love to also migrate and see the birds on the shores of the northwest or in their winter grounds down south.

]]>Here are the fish and other animals, (outside of the mammal gallery) that inhabit the big beautiful world. Some of them were very much harder to photograph than say a big grizzly bear. The pup fish for instance can only be found for a few weeks to come out of hibernation, and only in a few select salty streams left in the world. Hence they are on the endangered species list. Others like the Dolly Varden took 2 hours to get one decent photograph.
