Walk into the Light

Walk into the Light

Occasionally the toe of a glacier will have a melt water tunnel which is large enough and stable enough to venture underneath the ice. It is like being in a church. The ground is virgin, never having felt the press of foot since the dawn of man. The air breathes past you from the belly of the ice thousands of feet up the mountain valley. Water and small stones drop from the ceiling as if to remind you this is a live moving breathing, pulsing sculpture, not a dead block of ice. This doesn't happen on every Alaska Photo Safari, but when it does it's magical. The trick on all photo safaris is to be open to what Nature presents, to be flexible and aware.
